PARK

a variety of specialty shops, carrying
everything from fine jewelry, antiques,
wine and perfume to clothing, books, coffee
and novelty gifts. Also, includes
restaurants, art galleries and salons

cozy Park Plaza Hotel. The village green,

| From
its humble beginnings as a log cabin situated
on real estate between Lakes Virginia
and Mizell in 1858, Winter Park has grown
from a wilderness outpost in a pine forest
to a luxurious haven for snowbirds - a
charming section of Greater Orlando in
Central Florida. This is thanks to Loring
Augustus Chase, whose vision of a planned
community with scenic, curving brick roads,
charming Mediterranean-style architecture
with houses in a park-like setting
of Spanish-moss draped live oak, all centered
around a chain of 17 lakes. |

| Recently,
ground was broken for the new Hannibal
Square Heritage Center which will be
home to a center to recognize the contributions
of African Americans with exhibits featuring
photographs and oral histories.
Theater is also a large part of the make-up of the city. These include the Annie Russell Theatre, the Enzian Theater, the Fred Stone Theatre, the Paper Moon Theatre Company and the Winter Park Playhouse.

History
The Farmer's Market, now refurbished to
accommodate large gatherings, was Winter
Park's railroad station, and contains
historic memorabilia depicting the city's
roots in the Winter Park Historical Association
and Museum. The railroad, dedicated in 1880 by U.S.
Grant, opened up this new destination
to visitors from the busy St. Johns River
area to the east, and by 1882 the city
of Winter Park was dedicated. |

A few years later Rollins College, the very first
institute of higher learning in the state and now rated number one in the southeast, was
built. By 1890, the population of the town reached
a thriving 600. Winter Park grew steadily
despite a devastating freeze in 1895, and thanks
to Charles H. Morse of Chicago who stabilized
the town by acquiring property owned by the
Winter Park Company. When the 1924 real estate
boom hit, the population had blossomed to 2,360.
It has been thriving ever since and is now one
of Florida's most unique year-round destinations
which has remained true to the plans of its
founders. Today the city is home to around 27,000 residents and considered to be one of the richest cities in Florida. |

And for those of you who enjoy the water, the Winter
Park Chain of Lakes are 2,781 acres running right through
downtown Winter Park. Lakes Virginia, Osceola,
Maitland, Mizell and Minneola are interconnected with
narrow, but relatively deep channels. A public ramp
located behind Rollins College provides boat access,
but a ramp use permit is required from the City of Maitland or
Winter Park. Water skiing and sightseers in pontoon
boats may give anglers the illusion that the chain
is not a good fishery, but Largemouth bass, sunshine
bass, and crappie populations are decent and can provide
good angling in an urban setting. Lake Virginia is
best for sunshine bass and crappie; Osceola and Maitland
for largemouth bass. With the average high temperature in January 71 degrees and the average low in July 73 degrees, beautiful Florida weather allows getting outdoors to enjoy all Winter Park has to offer.
