Sanford
is located on southern Lake Monroe north
of Orlando
and has a 2000 population of 38,291.
The town was named after Gen. Henry Sanford,
a landowner, and was the filming location
for the 1991 movie, "My Girl."
In
1913, when Seminole County was carved
from Orange County,
Sanford, Florida continued as
the county seat. Evidence of its governmental
functions are the imposing County Courthouse
and City Hall near the Lake Monroe waterfront
and in the heart of the downtown business
district.
Beautiful
houses in the area range from charming
condos, villas and townhouses to luxury
estate homes. The closeness of
cultural and entertainment choices and
close-by beaches and the wonderful central
Florida weather make this an idyllic
place to call home. Let Orlando
Realtor John Hambrick
help you find your new home in downtown's
historic district, a retirement community
or in one of the beautiful area golf
club communities. A diversity
of living, from small-town to cosmopolitan
Orlando, is available in the geographic
real estate area of
Lake
County,
Osceola
County,
Orange County,
Seminole
County,
Polk
County,
Brevard County and
Volusia County.
The
golf links of the Mayfair Country Club
had their beginnings in 1921 when the
city of Sanford laid out the 18-hole course
which was played by many of the big name
touring professionals of the day including
Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer and the Hebert
Brothers. The property was subsequently
sold to the New York Baseball Giants who
operated the golf course along with their
baseball training camp and the Mayfair
Inn, which now houses the New Tribes
Mission in downtown Sanford.
The
Sanford RiverWalk is a beautiful new 1.2 mile
walkway along the St. Johns River. The 12-foot-wide
paved bike/pedestrian pathway is just one step
in the revitalization of this beautiful and
historic city.
Developers
are also continuing with plans for magnificent
waterfront town homes and condominiums and brightly
painted riverfront shops and restaurants
The
Sanford Naval Air Station, built in 1941 and
deeded by the federal government to the City
of Sanford in 1969, has remained active and
contributed to the growth of the area. Today,
1,900 acres comprises Orlando
Sanford Airport which welcomes over one
million passengers per year on charter and scheduled
airline flights. Approximately 60 companies
are located in the airport's industrial park.
