Umatilla High School is expanding their School-To-Work
offerings by restructuring the existing departmental concept into career
clusters with integrated curricula that support work-related applications.
UHS's goals are as follows:
- Every graduating senior will have a meaningful learning
work experience prior to graduation.
- Every Umatilla High School student will exit the high
school setting with a career road map leading to one of the following options:
postsecondary training/education, the military or employment.
- Every graduating senior will have a resume included in
his/her career portfolio.
All students in grades 10-12 have been places in one of
the five career clusters (majors) currently in place at Umati/em>High for the
1998-99 school year. Upon registration in the spring, each student requested
placement in the cluster that related to his/her career interest area.

Highlights include:
Umatilla High School's Academy of Public Service works in
conjunction with the St. John's River Water Management District on the Emeralda
Marsh reclamation project. Students in the Academy apply the academic skills
learned in the classroom to real life work on the marsh.
Other Umatilla High items:
- All juniors at Umatilla High School are provided with
job shadowing opportunities.
- Sandy Pettit, former UHS Occupational/School-To-Work
Specialist developed an internship manual for district wide use. This manual
will be presented at the National Tech Prep Network conference in Kansas City
in October, 1998. She also developed a job shadowing manual for district wide
use.
- At Umatilla High School, co-op and on-the-job training
opportunities for students have been expanded to include cooperative education
experiences for students within the business programs of study.
- A business partner blitz was held which enabled the
occupational specialist to developed extensive business partner contactsr; a
database with that information has been created and shared with the Region 14
consortia.
- School-To-Work business brochures, along with
promotional letters, were mailed to area businesses.
- Students in media classes produce promotional videos
for local businesses.
- Students in the economics class run their own
entrepreneurial business. School spirit hats and teeshirts are produced and
sold through sport booster clubs.
